CMA CGM inks methanol deal at Shanghai Port

March 27, 2025 |

In China, Xinde Marine News reports CMA CGM, Shanghai Port Group, and Shanghai Electric signed a long-term green methanol supply cooperation agreement to fuel dual-fuel ships, accelerate shipping decarbonization, and support CMA CGM’s 2050 net zero emissions target—financial terms were not disclosed.

“Dafei Group has always been committed to meeting the challenges of clean fuel supply and accelerating the implementation of innovative and sustainable solutions through global strategic partnerships,” said Farid Trad, vice president of ship filling and energy transformation at CMA CGM, which is referred to as Dafei Group in Chinese-language coverage.

According to the agreement, Shanghai Electric will supply green methanol from a production base in Taonan, Jilin Province. The fuel will be transported via land and sea to Shanghai’s Yangshan Port, where it will be used to bunker CMA CGM’s fleet of dual-fuel vessels, including the 13,000-TEU CMA CGM IRON, launched in February as the group’s first methanol-powered ship.

Shanghai Port Group will oversee the logistics chain and refueling operations. “The cooperation with Shanghai Port Group and Shanghai Electric is not only another milestone on the road to the group’s energy transformation, but also highlights our firm commitment to achieving the 2050 net zero carbon emission target,” said Trad.
