October 26, 2024 |

In France, CMA CGM Group and SUEZ signed a memorandum of understanding to develop biomethane production facilities, aiming to decarbonize maritime transport in Europe, targeting production of up to 100,000 tonnes of biomethane per year by 2030.

CMA CGM, headquartered in Marseille, is a global leader in shipping and logistics, committed to achieving Net Zero Carbon by 2050. The company has invested $18 billion in 131 vessels capable of running on low-carbon fuels like biomethane, biomethanol, and synthetic fuels, set to launch by 2028.

SUEZ, based in Paris, specializes in water management, waste management, and environmental services. It focuses on turning waste into renewable energy and circular economy solutions, helping to decarbonize industries and cities worldwide.

This collaboration includes joint research and development of innovative biofuel technologies, including hydrothermal gasification, and a €100 million investment in biomethane facilities. Rodolphe Saadé, CEO of CMA CGM, called the deal a “major step” in boosting the biomethane sector and accelerating decarbonization. SUEZ CEO Sabrina Soussan highlighted the partnership’s potential to transform waste into sustainable energy for shipping, reinforcing Europe’s energy independence.
