Clariant catalysts tapped for Europe’s first waste-to-methanol plant

November 13, 2025 |

In Spain, Clariant announced on November 10 it will supply catalysts to the Ecoplanta project, Europe’s first commercial-scale facility to produce methanol from municipal solid waste. The plant, led by Repsol and located in El Morell near Tarragona, will use Enerkem’s gasification process to convert 400,000 tons of non-recyclable waste annually into 240,000 tons of methanol.

Clariant’s catalysts will be used to remove impurities from the syngas and support methanol synthesis. The plant is expected to reduce landfill use and avoid an estimated 3.4 million tons of CO₂ emissions over its first decade, based on project developer estimates.

Scheduled for completion in 2029, the project adds to growing efforts to convert waste into fuel. The methanol produced is intended for use in maritime transport, road fuels, and as feedstock for chemicals and sustainable aviation fuel.
