China sets record with 4,200-ton biofuel bunkering at Ningbo-Zhoushan Port

In China, China Water Transport News reports Sinopec’s China Marine Bunker Supply Company delivered 4,200 tons of bonded B24 marine biofuel to the Maersk container vessel Kirsten Maersk at the Ningbo-Zhoushan Port, setting a new domestic record for the largest single biofuel bunkering and marking China’s progress toward becoming a global center for bonded marine fuel supply.

The B24 biofuel, consisting of 24% biodiesel made from ISCC-certified waste cooking oil and 76% low-sulfur fuel oil, is expected to cut carbon emissions by around 20%, in line with IMO 2020 sulfur limits and shipping decarbonization targets. This was Sinopec’s first biofuel bunkering operation in East China.

“This milestone…marks a solid step forward for Zhoushan to become a global bonded marine fuel bunkering center,” according to the report from China Water Transport News.

The fueling took place in the Zhejiang Free Trade Zone, which has pioneered practices such as “direct supply across customs zones” and bonded fuel blending. The zone now boasts 20.19 million cubic meters of bonded oil and gas storage and has surpassed 7 million tons in annual bonded bunkering volume, establishing Zhoushan as the world’s fourth-largest marine fueling port.
