In China, Qianjiang Evening News reports in Shaoxing’s Shangyu District, construction began on the world’s first pure methanol electric intelligent vessel at the Yonghe Lianyong Port-Industry Zone, a major new logistics hub along the Hangzhou-Ningbo Canal designed to support inland green shipping and advanced shipbuilding.
The vessel, developed by Shaoxing Blue City Zhige Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., will carry up to 2,000 tons and combine methanol fuel, electric propulsion, and intelligent control systems. The company said the ship is engineered for “low-carbon, low-emission, high-efficiency operation” and is intended for inland and coastal logistics. The project has already secured 22 domestic orders.
Located at the intersection of major trade corridors, the new port zone is built around a “one line, two phases, three clusters” framework for building a sustainable inland shipping and manufacturing hub. Officials said it will connect Zhejiang’s waterways directly to Shanghai, Ningbo-Zhoushan Port, and Yiwu International Dry Port.
“This is not only a technological breakthrough, but a key strategic move in Shangyu’s push to lead in intelligent equipment,” said a Yonghe town official. The initiative is part of Shaoxing’s broader plan to develop a green shipping economy aligned with national dual-carbon goals.
