China launches world’s first 9,300-car methanol-fueled auto carrier

May 29, 2025 |

In China on May 21 in Nantong, China Merchants Energy Shipping launched the world’s first methanol dual-fuel roll-on/roll-off car carrier with a capacity of 9,300 vehicles, built by China Merchants Industry; the vessel is scheduled for delivery in the second half of 2025.

The ship features a methanol-powered propulsion system including main and auxiliary engines, boilers, and dedicated fuel supply units. It is the largest methanol-fueled car carrier currently under construction globally and is designed to meet IMO Tier III emission standards while operating at a service speed of 19 knots.

According to the company, the vessel is “the first globally to use green methanol as its primary energy source” for this vessel type. It marks the lead ship in a series of methanol-powered carriers ordered by China Merchants and represents a major milestone in the company’s low-carbon fleet strategy.

Following its launch, the vessel will undergo outfitting, commissioning, and sea trials. The project is part of China’s broader push to commercialize alternative marine fuels and strengthen domestic capabilities in building large, energy-efficient vehicle carriers.
