In China, People’s Daily reports China’s first domestically built dual-fuel methanol bunkering vessel Daqing 268 completed its inaugural fueling operation on January 21 at Yantian Port, delivering 200 tons of green methanol to COSCO’s Carnation, an international oceangoing vessel.
Daqing 268 is designed to handle both conventional fuels and green methanol, enabling flexible supply while reducing emissions. It marks a major milestone in China’s domestic methanol bunkering capability, especially in the Greater Bay Area, where no such infrastructure existed before.
Green methanol, produced via biomass gasification or renewable hydrogen combined with captured carbon dioxide, is recognized by the International Maritime Organization as a key fuel for decarbonizing shipping. Officials from the Shenzhen Maritime Safety Administration said the successful debut signals that Shenzhen Port is now equipped to offer green methanol services, positioning the region as a serious contender in the race to establish global low-carbon refueling hubs.
The event drew representatives from more than 100 shipping lines, energy companies, and certification bodies, underscoring China’s push to develop a domestic green fuel supply chain for international shipping.
