In China, Zhejiang Daily reported on September 29 at Jiangxi Jiangxin Shipyard, Ningbo Ocean launched the first of two 740-TEU pure electric container ships, completing hull and power system installation for what it calls “the largest and first batch of 10,000-ton pure electric container ships under construction in the world.”
Each vessel is powered by ten containerized battery packs, supports high-voltage shore charging and rapid battery exchange, and operates with zero emissions during sailing, berthing, and cargo handling. The ship includes an intelligent cabin system capable of “route autonomous planning,” “unmanned driving,” and “autonomous collision avoidance.”
The vessel had already completed hull closure and pre-berthing. Remaining phases include dock outfitting, mooring trials, and sea testing.
Ningbo Ocean described the project as “an important grasp” of China’s dual carbon strategy. The company operates 29 energy-saving ships, which make up 54.7 percent of its fleet. The new class is intended to support “green and intelligent” development and contribute to “double first-class” national maritime goals.
