In China, Xinde Marine News reports China’s top shipowners and policymakers gathered on January 5 to launch the New Energy and Environment Committee, a high-level alliance set to orchestrate the country’s push for low-carbon shipping. With 320 attendees and 82 founding members, the group promises to weld policy, fuel supply, tech development, and ship design into a single drive shaft powering China’s maritime transition.
The committee is backed by the Ministry of Transport and chaired by China Ship Fuel Corporation, which called for “co-construction, co-creation, and co-benefit” across the industry. Vice Minister Shi Binfeng pledged tighter regulatory guardrails to speed up deployment of hydrogen and electric vessels. Qin Ling, speaking for the chair unit, promised to broker fuel supply deals, pool research talent, and push technical standards into commercial use.
The launch doubled as a showcase. China Classification Society awarded AiP to a 2,600-ton hydrogen-electric hybrid bunkering vessel, marking a first for domestic fueling tech. Experts from CATL-Eboat and Dalian Maritime University pitched new fuel strategies, including a “3-2-1” layout for ammonia, methanol, and electric systems. With its launch, the committee positions China’s domestic fleet and its policy apparatus at the helm of a tightly coordinated maritime energy transition.
