China firms plan green methanol network

July 9, 2025 |

In China, China Marine Fuel Company and PowerChina’s Beijing Engineering Corporation have signed a framework agreement to develop a green methanol supply chain for the shipping sector, linking production, storage, distribution, and bunkering into a single system intended to support lower-emissions marine operations.

The deal brings together one of China’s largest ship fuel suppliers and a state-backed engineering firm with experience across renewable energy infrastructure, including hydrogen, wind, and synthetic fuels. It also reflects growing pressure on shipping firms to meet climate targets through alternative fuels, particularly methanol, which has gained traction among newbuilds.

“Decarbonizing marine fuel is key to transforming the sector,” said Ding Lihai, Deputy General Manager at China Marine Fuel. “This partnership gives us a way to scale green methanol to meet real demand.”

Li Jianjun, his counterpart at the Beijing Institute, described the agreement as a practical way to connect upstream energy development with downstream bunkering. “Our strengths in design and systems integration will support broader use of green methanol across the industry.”

The companies say the model could be scaled and replicated across other sites, combining fuel production, engineering design, and distribution.
