China eyes green methanol buildout to meet ship fuel demand

June 4, 2025 |

In China, Zhitong Finance reports GF Securities said green methanol demand from methanol-powered ships—estimated at 930,000 tons—far exceeds current supply of just over 200,000 tons, creating “a window period to earn a green premium” and accelerating construction of upstream green hydrogen and methanol projects in China.

The firm noted that global shipowners have begun buying methanol-fueled vessels while forming partnerships with green methanol producers and port operators to secure future fuel availability. Projects that are already aligned with shipowners stand to benefit most as vessel deliveries begin from late 2025.

GF Securities also projects that China’s domestic electrolyzer tenders will reach 1.5 GW in 2025, driven by large-scale hydrogen-methanol initiatives timed to coincide with the maritime sector’s fuel transition under the IMO’s long-term net-zero framework. The typical build time for such projects is 1–2 years.

“2025 is the final year of China’s 14th Five-Year hydrogen energy plan,” the report said, forecasting further policy momentum in the second half of the year. Analysts advise tracking progress on flagship green hydrogen projects and vessel-fuel offtake agreements.
