China completes first B5 biodiesel bunkering for port tug in Xiamen

November 27, 2025 |

In China, Xiamen Port’s Haicang terminal on November 20 completed the country’s first bunkering operation using B5 biodiesel for a port tugboat, marking the first time this fuel blend has been fully applied under official procedures.

While higher blends like B24 have been tested in other Chinese ports, B5 had not yet seen real-world application in marine fueling. Officials said the trial shifts B5 from theory to practice, demonstrating how it can be safely and systematically integrated into port operations.

The milestone follows Xiamen’s designation in April 2024 as one of 22 national biofuel pilot cities by the National Energy Administration. City leaders said they aim to expand clean energy use across marine and port sectors, using this first fueling as a model to build out broader infrastructure and regulation.
