CF, Trafigura, and TFG Marine team up on ammonia fuel rollout

January 21, 2026 |

In Illinois, CF Industries announced signing a memorandum of understanding with Trafigura and TFG Marine to coordinate the rollout of low-carbon ammonia as a marine fuel, targeting initial deployment along the U.S. Gulf Coast and Northwest Europe. The agreement marks a shift from spot cargoes to full supply chain planning, aligning producers, traders, and bunker providers under one framework.

CF Industries will supply ammonia from its Donaldsonville plant in Louisiana. Trafigura brings global market access and logistics, while TFG Marine will handle delivery and last-mile bunkering through its network of 35 ports. Together, the firms aim to address market development, stakeholder coordination, and bunkering logistics.

The move builds on earlier shipments between CF and Trafigura and signals a pivot toward structured marine fuel applications. Ammonia has drawn attention as a zero-carbon option, but questions around infrastructure and handling remain. While not a commercial supply agreement, the memorandum establishes a concrete framework for collaboration on ammonia fuel logistics, with defined roles across production, transport, and delivery.
