In Greece, Greek City Times reports at the Port of Lavrion, Celestyal Discovery became the first vessel in Greece to refuel with a marine biofuel blend, combining conventional marine fuel with second-generation biofuel derived from recycled cooking oils, reducing CO₂ emissions by approximately 21%, according to supplier Coral Marine Products SA.
The operation was carried out by Coral Marine, a subsidiary of Motor Oil Group, in partnership with Celestyal Cruises. The fuel, developed by Motor Oil’s Verd, complies with the new ISO 8217:2024 marine fuel standard. “This is a significant step toward sustainable cruising,” said Celestyal COO Captain George Koumpenas.
Celestyal’s CEO Chris Theophilides said, “This biofuel milestone reflects the power of local expertise and global goals uniting for a greener future.”
