Catalina Express, Incat Crowther team up on LA clean ferry

June 26, 2025 |

In Los Angeles, Catalina Express and Incat Crowther announced that they will build a $30 million renewable diesel-powered passenger ferry as part of the Port of Los Angeles’ LA MER emissions reduction project, jointly funded by a $15 million grant from the California Air Resources Board and $15 million in matching funds from Catalina Express.

The 48-meter vessel will serve the one-hour route between Long Beach and Santa Catalina Island, replacing three older ferries. Powered by four EPA Tier 4 MTU 4000 engines and fueled by R-99 renewable diesel, it will carry up to 516 passengers at speeds of 37 knots.

Construction will begin in July 2025 at Marine Group Boat Works in San Diego, with sea trials expected in 2027.

“Catalina Express is grateful to CARB for this grant and the partnership with the Port of Los Angeles,” said CEO Greg Bombard. “Their support has allowed us to move forward on the construction of this new vessel.”

CARB Chair Liane Randolph said the agency is “proud to support the development of the next generation of advanced marine vessels.” The vessel will comply with CARB harbor craft rules once certification is complete.
