Cargill deploys dual-fuel bulker for methanol trials

January 21, 2026 |

In the Philippines, Cargill has launched Brave Pioneer, a dual-fuel dry bulk vessel built by Tsuneishi at its Cebu shipyard and owned by Mitsui, for a maiden voyage designed to test green methanol operations across multiple regions. The vessel will bunker methanol in Singapore, call at Western Australia, and continue to Europe.

The Cebu-built ship is the first of five methanol-capable vessels chartered by Cargill and reflects the company’s focus on trialing low-emission technologies under operational conditions. Trials will cover methanol bunkering readiness, verification of environmental attributes through carbon accounting systems, and market response to lower-carbon freight offerings.

Cargill’s broader program also includes wind-assisted propulsion, voyage optimization, and energy efficiency retrofits. The new fleet is designed for flexibility, operating on conventional fuels today with the capacity to transition as green methanol supply develops.
