In California, Carbon Ridge announced the successful deployment of the maritime industry’s first centrifugal carbon capture system aboard a commercial vessel. The system was installed in July at Besiktas Shipyard in Turkey on the STI Spiga, a long range product tanker owned by Scorpio Tankers.
The system, known as OCCS, captures carbon dioxide from engine exhaust, compresses and liquefies it, and stores it onboard for later offloading. Unlike conventional carbon capture columns, the centrifugal design uses a modular layout that reduces space requirements by up to 75 percent. It can be installed vertically or horizontally to suit vessel constraints.
The technology is designed for both retrofits and newbuilds and is compatible with all marine fuel types. Scorpio Tankers, a global operator of product tankers, is supporting the pilot as part of its efforts to reduce operational emissions.
Carbon Ridge also announced additional financing led by Katapult Ocean and Alfa8. With that raise, company funding exceeds $20 million.
