In France, classification society Bureau Veritas signed a declaration on November 7 with more than 30 European stakeholders to accelerate the use of nuclear technology in maritime and port operations. The agreement, announced at the World Nuclear Exhibition in Paris, focuses on deploying Small Modular Reactors and commits signatories to pilot projects, regulatory engagement, and transparent public communication.
The declaration identifies SMRs as a potential low-carbon energy source for shipping and port infrastructure, aligning with France’s €1 billion investment under the France 2030 plan. Maritime emissions are considered one of the hardest sectors to decarbonize, and the coalition argues that nuclear offers a scalable, zero-emissions solution.
Signatories include Bureau Veritas, global shipping group CMA CGM, nuclear services firm Onet, and insurance broker Bessé. The group is calling for coordinated international regulation, harmonized safety standards, and clearer access to climate finance to move the technology from concept to application.
