Biofuel bunkering debuts in Qingdao for international ship

June 18, 2025 |

In China on June 14, 2025, China’s first biofuel bunkering operation for an international vessel at a northern port took place at Qingdao Port’s Qianwan Terminal, where the bunker ship Dayuanyou 8 delivered 1,300 tons of B24 marine biofuel to the HMM Vancouver.

The bunkering marked a milestone for Qingdao, filling a gap in clean fuel supply infrastructure in northern Chinese ports. B24, a ready-to-use biofuel blend, can reduce carbon emissions by approximately 20% compared to conventional marine fuel, according to port officials.

Authorities framed the development as part of broader goals for the Qingdao Free Trade Zone. The move “will inject strong momentum into building a green, low-carbon, high-quality development demonstration zone” and enhance Qingdao’s standing as an international shipping hub, the port stated.

The operation was conducted at berth 109 in the Qianwan port area and is expected to accelerate the integration of biofuel into regional bunkering networks. It also positions Qingdao to play a greater role in China’s maritime decarbonization strategy, as shipping companies adapt to increasingly stringent emissions regulations and seek reliable alternative fuel options in East Asia.
