In Argentina, Bichos de Campo reported that Argentine firm Bioceres Crop Solutions has received a “notice of approval” from the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and already has legal protection for an event which corresponds to the transgenic wheat HB4, the first transgenic wheat to be cultivated and consumed in the world.
“This approval is the first of four potential patents that the company is seeking for HB4 wheat in the United States, ensuring protection for this technology and the associated production system until 2042,” Bioceres said.
The firm noted that “HB4 wheat offers better drought tolerance and better weed management options compared to conventional wheat,” since it has added the gene for resistance to applications of the herbicide glufosinate ammonium. “The technology has already been approved by the USDA for cultivation and by the FDA for use in food and feed in the United States,” the company added.
