In Shanghai, the ports of Barcelona and Shanghai have signed an agreement to develop a Green Shipping and Digital Corridor connecting the two hubs. Formalized during a joint visit by Catalan officials to Shanghai, the pact focuses on decarbonizing maritime trade, expanding green fuel infrastructure, and aligning digital and operational standards.
The new agreement builds on last year’s pledge to collaborate on sustainability and innovation. Now the ports are moving from intention to infrastructure: joint training programs, coordination on fuel regulations, and shared standards for green-fuel bunkering and emissions tracking.
Shanghai, the world’s busiest container port, and Barcelona, a key European gateway for Chinese trade, already share substantial commercial ties. China accounts for nearly half of Barcelona’s imports and 10 percent of its exports. Hong Kong operator Hutchison Port Holdings’ majority stake in Barcelona’s BEST terminal, along with the port’s growing role in Chinese EV distribution confirms the agreement rests on an existing commercial foundation.
