Avenir Ascension to run fully on bio-LNG through 2025

April 2, 2025 |

In the UK, Manifold Times reports Avenir LNG’s bunker vessel Avenir Ascension will operate on 100% bio-LNG for propulsion throughout the remainder of the year, reducing the company’s annual CO₂ emissions by more than 3,500 metric tons.

This marks the first continuous use of bio-LNG by a bunker vessel worldwide. The decision was made voluntarily by Avenir LNG, which has been operating LNG and bio-LNG bunker supply vessels across Northwest Europe since 2022.

“We are seeing a growing demand from our customers for the supply of low emission bio-LNG,” said Jonathan Quinn, Managing Director of Avenir LNG. “We have developed a flexible and efficient supply chain to enable the cost effective delivery of Bio-LNG across North West Europe.”

“To further demonstrate our commitment to more sustainable marine fuels we have elected to run the Avenir Ascension on bio-LNG on a voluntary basis for 2025.”

Avenir’s customer base includes ferries, product tankers, and container vessels operating in Scandinavia and the Baltic Sea region. The company noted this shift aligns with its broader effort to reduce emissions beyond current regulatory requirements.
