Anthony Veder installs wind-assisted propulsion on gas carrier Coral Patula

October 17, 2024 |

In the Netherlands, Anthony Veder became the first company to install wind-assisted propulsion on a gas carrier, with the launch of two VentoFoils sails on its Ethylene carrier, Coral Patula. The sails, provided by Econowind, represent a significant step in the company’s effort to reduce its carbon footprint as it works towards achieving net-zero emissions by 2035. A sister ship, Coral Pearl, will also be retrofitted with similar sails later this year.

The VentoFoils are designed to enhance propulsion by utilizing wind energy, potentially reducing fuel consumption by up to 10% in optimal wind conditions. Björn van de Weerdhof, Anthony Veder’s Commercial and Sustainability Director, explained that this initiative is part of the company’s broader sustainability roadmap, which includes optimizing newbuild designs and using bio-LNG.

Rens Groot, Chief Operations Officer at Econowind, praised Anthony Veder’s leadership, noting their quick and effective execution of the project. By integrating wind-assisted propulsion with existing engine systems, Anthony Veder is set to reduce both fuel costs and CO2 emissions, contributing to the maritime industry’s push toward cleaner, more sustainable energy solutions.
