Amogy drops anchor in South Korea for ammonia power push

February 6, 2025 |

In New York, Amogy announced the opening of a new office in Pangyo, South Korea to advance its ammonia-based power solutions for shipping and industry, citing the country’s strong policy support and established supply chains. Backed by $56 million in venture financing, the expansion places Amogy closer to key partners, including SK Innovation, Samsung Heavy Industries, and HD Hyundai, as South Korea invests in ammonia and hydrogen technologies for energy and maritime applications.

South Korea was the first country to auction electricity generation using hydrogen and ammonia under the Clean Hydrogen Production Standard and recently enacted the Distributed Energy Act to promote decentralized power. It is also home to three of the world’s largest shipyards and leads in fuel cell deployment by total power output. “Under the significant regulatory support for its hydrogen economy, South Korea’s network of world-class organizations in manufacturing, maritime, and hydrogen and ammonia technologies has already been instrumental in accelerating Amogy’s growth,” said Seonghoon Woo, CEO and co-founder of Amogy.

The Pangyo office will be led by Managing Director Dr. Stone Zhang, formerly of Norwegian-based classification society DNV. Amogy aims to deepen collaboration with Korean industry leaders to scale ammonia-fueled solutions for maritime and distributed power applications.
