In Korea, Offshore Energy reports on July 26, Belgian shipowner EXMAR launched the world’s first oceangoing ammonia-powered gas carrier at HD Hyundai Mipo shipyard in South Korea.
The 46,000 cubic meter carrier runs on a two-stroke ammonia engine built by Swiss firm WinGD. With a length of 190 meters and three cargo holds, the ship is designed to transport both LPG and ammonia.
Beyond its novel propulsion system, the vessel includes a shaft generator to harvest energy from its main engine and a selective catalytic reduction unit to curb nitrogen oxide emissions.
This is the first in a series of four ammonia-powered ships commissioned by EXMAR. All are being built at the same yard and will eventually be operated by EXMAR LPG France, a subsidiary formed late last year.
The vessel’s launch comes as the shipping sector accelerates efforts to adopt alternative fuels. For EXMAR, ammonia is no longer a future fuel. It’s already in the water.
