American Bureau of Shipping CEO backs Net-Zero Framework

October 9, 2025 |

In Greece, on October 6,  ABS Chairman and CEO Christopher J. Wiernicki said the International Maritime Organization’s Net Zero Framework is “vital” to avoiding conflicting climate regulations during a keynote at the Capital Link Operational Excellence in Shipping Forum in Athens.

“The IMO has a critical role in delivering a unified global regulatory framework, something the industry needs if we are to avoid the fragmentation and inefficiencies arising from a patchwork of regional regulation,” he said.

He called for coordinated action toward 2050 targets. “Success is a team sport and we need to approach getting to Net Zero by 2050 as if we were building a ship: structured, systematic, explicit, safe and achievable.”

For context: Consideration of IMO’s Net Zero Framework is scheduled during the extraordinary session of the IMO’s Marine Environment Protection Committee in London October 14-17. The NZF could be adopted by consensus or voted on among Member States. If the latter, only the states that are party to MARPOL Annex VI and present can vote. If two-thirds vote in favor of the framework, it will be adopted.
