Alder Renewables and Bioénergie AECN announce Project Avance

May 11, 2025 |

In Québec, Alder Renewables and Bioénergie AE Côte-Nord announced Project Avance, a strategic partnership to produce Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) from sawmill residues in Port-Cartier, Québec. This project aims to build a first-of-its-kind pilot plant and establish one of the first biomass-to-SAF production facilities in North America.

Alder Renewables’ proprietary technology will convert bio-oil produced at the Port-Cartier plant into low-carbon Alder Renewable Crude (ARC), which will then be refined into SAF and other transportation fuels. This process can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80% compared to conventional jet fuel. Production is expected to begin in 2027.

The project leverages existing infrastructure and aligns with Canada’s Aviation Action Plan. It has potential for full commercial deployment across Québec, creating new revenue streams for the forestry industry and helping decarbonize aviation. The project team is seeking support from the Canadian federal and Québec provincial governments.
