In France, Air Liquide has received €110 million from the European Innovation Fund to develop ENHANCE, a large-scale renewable hydrogen production and liquefaction project in Antwerp-Bruges, Belgium, aimed at cutting over 300,000 tonnes of CO₂ annually by using ammonia instead of natural gas, announced December 10, 2024.
The project will retrofit an existing hydrogen unit to use renewable ammonia and include a first-of-its-kind hydrogen liquefier, serving industries like chemicals, transport, and aviation. Leveraging expertise from its pilot ammonia cracking plant, Air Liquide aims to build Europe’s hydrogen supply chain infrastructure and advance decarbonization efforts.
This funding milestone supports Air Liquide’s ADVANCE strategy and aligns with European carbon neutrality goals, with the project positioned to significantly reduce emissions in hard-to-abate sectors.
