In Norway, Offshore Energy reports Aasen Shipping has taken delivery of Aasvaer, a hybrid self-discharging cargo vessel equipped with battery systems and methanol-ready class notation. Built by Royal Bodewes and delivered on October 17, the 9,400-deadweight-ton ship is designed to reduce emissions and accommodate future fuel upgrades.
The 120-meter vessel includes a battery pack for peak shaving on both main and auxiliary engines, and can operate emission-free in ports with shore power. It is also classified as methanol- and ethanol-fuel ready, allowing future retrofitting to run on green methanol as fuel systems and supply chains mature.
As a self-discharging vessel, Aasvaer carries onboard equipment to unload its own cargo, bypassing the need for shore-based cranes and enabling faster port operations, especially in terminals with limited infrastructure.
Aasvaer is the first in a three-vessel series ordered by Aasen Shipping from Royal Bodewes in late 2023.
