In Australia, popular supermarket chain Woolworths is defending itself against a lawsuit brought by consumer watchdogs over allegedly misleading claims that its picnic ware is biodegradable.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission says plates, bowls, and cutlery—sold from November 2014 to November 2017 under the label W Select eco—did not break down within the claimed time period. The products were also sold at a price premium.

“One of the suppliers of the line also had significant qualifications on its website about the biodegradability and composability of its products,” ACCC Commissioner Sarah Court told The Advocate.  “Businesses making environmental claims about their products must take reasonable steps to ensure the benefits are achievable for ordinary Australian consumers.”
