In New York, Synonym Biotechnologies, a financing and development platform for biomanufacturing infrastructure, has released a report detailing a dearth of fermentation capacity at scales higher than 20,000 liters. The report notes that this shortage is a key bottleneck for growing large-scale biomanufacturing.

“This is one of the many mismatches that we’ve identified between what existing facilities provide and what the users increasingly need,” according to the report, available at  www.capacitor.bio/trends. “We hope this will help the ecosystem understand which gaps need to be addressed as more facilities come online in the near future.”

The report also offers details on types of facilities by geography, bioreactor sizes, and product expertise. “At Synonym, we’ve made it our mission to build the infrastructure the world needs to manufacture more things with biology and to be a catalyst for the emerging bioeconomy,” the organization says in a press statement.
