In Slovakia, German chemical company Evonik has broken ground on the world’s first commercial production facility for rhamnolipid biosurfactants.

Rhamnolipids are 100% biobased and biodegradable surfactants.  Their exceptional foam-forming properties make them suitable for use in household cleaners and personal care products like shampoos and micellar waters. Their pleasant taste also enables the formulation of oral care products, such as toothpaste, without strong taste masking components.

The new plant is a triple-digit million-euro investment and strengthens the site at Slovenská Ľupča position as a strategic center for biotechnology.

Yann d’Hervé, head of Evonik’s Care Solutions business line, calls the June 29th groundbreaking an important day for Evonik’s partnership with consumer products giant Unilever, which is using Evonik’s rhamnolipids in its products.
