In France, cognac brand Maison A de Fussigny has debuted a plant-based bottle for its 2050 Organic Cognac.

Weighing just 85 grams, the Green Gen Bottle is made of flax fiber and organically sourced resin. It is also water-soluble and biodegradable.

“We are proud to be the first to use the Green Gen Bottle which is not only very resistant, but also 10 times lighter than a traditional bottle,” Thomas Gonon, president of Maison A de Fussigny, tells The Spirits Business. “In terms of carbon footprint, we aim to be one of the lowest solutions for greenhouse gas emissions.”

France is a leading producer of flax, which his known for its strength and low water input needs. 5,000 bottles will be produced initially, and Maison A de Fussigny has made no claims of exclusivity to encourage other products and brands to trial the material.

“For us, this bottle is one of tomorrow’s premium packaging solutions for wine and spirits. On the consumer side, it is a material to be discovered by its texture, shaking up traditional codes of the bottle and adding a new dimension to the Cognac experience,” Gonon adds.
