Mattel launches biobased toys, wants to encourage “green behaviors” through pretend play

In California, toymaker Mattel has introduced carbon neutral toys, including two playsets with 56% plant-based content, as it works toward its goal of achieving 100% recycled, recyclable, or biobased plastic for all its plastics and packaging needs by 2030. The toy giant is also the first in the category to incorporate renewable polymers produced by Sabic and sold under the trade name TRUCIRCLE. 

The toys with renewable content include two from its MEGA preschool construction toy line: Build & Learn Eco House™ and the Grow & Protect Farm.  Packaging is made from 100% Forest Stewardship Council-certified paper or paperboard, plus soy-based inks and water-based varnishes to enhance recyclability.

Each set is also designed to help teach green behaviors through play patterns, like waste sorting, using electric transport, protecting honeybees and choosing renewable energy sources. 

Mattel also introduced a play recycling truck and “Action Drivers” under its iconic Matchbox brand, with 80% and 40% ISCC-certified “bio-circular plastic,” respectively.
