In Tennessee, jeans giant Levi Strauss & Co., sustainable fashion accelerator Fashion for Good, and natural pigments maker Stony Creek Colors have partnered to advance plant-based indigo dye.

Under the terms of the collaboration, Stony Creek Colors will provide its pre-reduced IndiGold  pigment to partners’ denim mills for performance testing and to evaluate different applications and shades. The group hopes to have IndiGold jeans available for commercial sale by late 2022 or early 2023.

Currently, indigo dye is made using petroleum-derived chemicals, and the denim-dyeing process requires pre-reduction steps that create toxic byproducts.

“The textile industry must move towards safer, renewable and regenerative inputs. Stony Creek Color’s innovation is driving this change and we are excited to be working closely with them and our partners to bring this to market,” says Katrin Ley, managing director of Fashion for Good.
