In Brazil, renewable chemicals company Amyris has acquired the clean beauty brand Costa Brazil for an undisclosed sum.

Co-founded by Francisco Costa and Michele Levy in December 2018, Costa Brazil is a clean luxury beauty and wellness brand inspired by Brazil’s biodiversity. Amyris plans to leverage its science platform and fermentation technology to develop and scale Costa Brazil products. All products are made from pure  ingredients sustainably sourced from the Amazon.

“My vision for Costa Brazil has always been to create a brand where beauty is inseparable from the health of the earth,” Costa, who will join Amyris as Chief Creative Officer, says in a press statement. “Amyris will be able to help execute this vision through its innovative science and research.”

John Melo, President and CEO of Amyris, notes that the beauty industry is undergoing a “supercycle” driven by consumer demand for sustainable sourced ingredients, and that the company’s clean beauty consumer business “continues its recent trajectory of more than doubling revenue versus the same period last year.”

The deal is expected to close by the end of March.
