Capsula Mundi, created by designers Anna Citelli and Raoul Bretzel, is an egg-shaped pod in which the deceased is buried in the fetal position under a sapling. The biodegrading bioplastic then fertilizes the tree. The product is a favorite in the growing “green burial” industry.
“In a culture that is far removed from nature, overloaded with objects, and focused on youth, death is often dealt with as a taboo,” the designers tells dezeen.com. “The biological life cycle and its transformations are the same for every living being. It is time for humans to realize our integrated part in nature. Capsula Mundi wants to emphasize that we are a part of nature’s cycle of transformation.”
The exhibit will run through September at the XXII Triennale di Milano.
