In California, Trader Joe’s is moving forward on their promises to look carefully at their products’ packaging and implement a sustainability framework to source renewable and recycled packaging materials and reducing packaging overall. While they stopped offering single-use plastic bags in December, they also replaced plastic produce bags with biodegradable and compostable produce bags. The Styrofoam produce packages were replaced with biobased compostable trays as well.
In a further move to reduce packaging, Trader Joe’s said in their February flyer that they are selling more loose produce and replacing plastic sleeves over their greeting cards with a compostable material, according to Environmental Leader.
“As we fulfill these steps in 2019, on an annual basis, we are eliminating more than 1 million pounds of plastic from our stores,” the Trader Joe’s flyer said, according to SFGate.
