In North Carolina, a study in Journal of Drugs in Dermatology has shown that the sensitive skincare products old by natural brand Burt’s Bees is as efficacious in maintaining healthy skin barrier function.

The regimen consists of Sensitive Facial Cleanser, Sensitive Daily Moisturizing Cream and Sensitive Night Cream. The article showed the products to be well-tolerated and clinically and statistically, superior to the control—a leading dermatologist-recommended synthetic regimen.

“The data suggest that nature-based products can be effective for patients who seek alternatives to conventional, synthetic skin care products,” says Zoe Draelos, MD, Dermatology Consulting Services, High Point, NC, the study’s principal investigator. “Patients with sensitive skin saw a clinical improvement in overall skin appearance, specifically in visual and tactile smoothness, clarity, and radiance.”

The study was a four-week, double-blind, randomized investigation that included 120 women with sensitive skin who suffer from clinically diagnosed rosacea, atopic dermatitis/eczema, or cosmetic intolerance.

“These data support the efficacy of nature-based formulations on sensitive skin, as well as the benefit of homeostasis of the epidermal barrier for overall skin health, including maintaining appropriate levels of hydration and allowing skin to breathe,” said Hemali Gunt, PhD, Head of Clinical and Scientific Affairs, at Burt’s Bees. “This publication affirms the benefit of natural products for sensitive skin, and offers an effective option as more people seek natural alternatives to conventional formulas.”
