In Quebec, insulation manufacturer Enerlab 2000 has received federal funding to replace petroleum-based materials in insulation and structural panels with lignin.

Natural Resources Canada’s Investments in Forest Industry Transformation program is providing Enerlab 2000 with $1.34 million. The company plans on using its iso-lignin technology, which uses waste lignin from pulp and paper mills. The company says the move will reduce its environmental impact and cut raw material costs by 20%.

The IFIT program says it will hand out $55 million through June 1, 2020. The funds are part of the country’s $867 million in funding to support workers and communities affected by the U.S. duties on softwood lumber.
