Driven by a legally binding goal to reach carbon neutrality by 2035, Finland relies heavily on its vast forests, with biomass providing over 80% of its renewable energy. Recent milestones include the launch of Metsä Fibre’s biomethanol plant and massive district heating investments by Helen and Tampereen Energia. Furthermore, Finland is heavily investing in emerging […]
Austria is aggressively targeting climate neutrality by 2040 and a 100% renewable electricity supply by 2030. Bioenergy already accounts for 20% of the nation’s final energy consumption. Newsworthy developments include OMV’s €200 million pilot plant at the Vienna refinery, which co-processes biogenic and fossil feedstocks to cut 360,000 tonnes of CO2 annually. Additionally, the Syngas […]
The Netherlands is drastically shifting its bioenergy policy, phasing out subsidies for biomass electricity and heat due to public health and sustainability concerns. Instead, the nation is prioritizing high-value biorefineries to produce chemicals, materials, and advanced biofuels. While fossil fuels still dominate 84% of the energy supply, the country aims for a 60% GHG reduction […]
China’s bioenergy sector is rapidly modernizing, shifting away from traditional residential heating toward industrial solid biofuels and bioelectricity. While coal still dominates its massive energy supply, major technological breakthroughs are accelerating China’s green transition. Notably, the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences achieved a world-record 85% protein yield in bioethanol biosynthesis, and China Petrochemical launched an […]
Bioenergy dominates Brazil’s renewable landscape, supplying over half of the nation’s heat and 22% of its transport energy. The recently passed 2024 Future Fuel Law marks a major milestone, establishing national mandates for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), green diesel, and carbon capture integration. Simultaneously, Raízen is aggressively expanding its second-generation ethanol capacity, targeting 1.6 billion […]
Bioenergy now accounts for over 60% of the EU’s renewable energy supply, proving crucial for offsetting the region’s 70% reliance on fossil fuels. The newly updated RED III directive significantly tightens biomass sustainability criteria and raises the binding 2030 renewable energy target to 42.5%. Furthermore, to curb dependency on Russian gas imports, the ambitious REPowerEU […]
Canada’s bioenergy sector is expanding rapidly, backed by CAD$1.5 billion from the Clean Fuels Fund and the Clean Fuel Regulations, which target a 15% carbon intensity reduction by 2030. While fossil fuels still dominate its overall energy supply, Canada is highly self-sufficient in bioenergy and ranks as the world’s second-largest wood pellet exporter. Breakthrough newsworthy […]
Despite early momentum, global cellulosic ethanol operational capacity peaked around 2015 and has stabilized near 40 facilities due to persistent economic and technical barriers, including high enzyme costs and complex feedstocks. Regional deployment varies significantly: Brazil leads by integrating advanced biofuels within its established sugarcane industry, while the US and Europe face project cancellations stemming […]
Unlike fossil fuels, which generate thermal NOx from atmospheric nitrogen, biomass combustion emissions primarily originate from chemically bound nitrogen within the fuel. Recent studies indicate that biomass facilities often act as a net sink for reactive nitrogen by converting a large portion of it into harmless, inert nitrogen gas. Advanced facilities, such as the Zaandam […]
