MAN Cryo Powers World’s First Hydrogen Superyacht with Cutting-Edge Fuel System

June 26, 2024 |

In Sweden, MAN Cryo has supplied Feadship’s 118.8-meter Project 821 superyacht with a pioneering liquid-hydrogen fuel system, enabling zero-emission propulsion. The system stores, evaporates, and heats liquid hydrogen, supplying it to the fuel cell. This project showcases MAN Cryo’s innovative engineering, featuring below-deck hydrogen tanks and predictive tools for tank management.

MAN Cryo encountered significant challenges due to the absence of design codes and standards for hydrogen tanks. Typically, type C LNG tanks follow IGF code, which isn’t fully applicable to hydrogen. To address this, MAN Cryo collaborated with Lloyds Register, developing a risk-assessment-based design that was approved for below-deck placement, marking a world-first and only the second approval for a marine liquid-hydrogen project.

Henrik Malm, Managing Director of MAN Energy Solutions Sweden, highlighted the project’s significance in advancing sustainable maritime technology. Despite hydrogen fuel cells being available for decades, their maritime application is unprecedented. Project 821’s technology allows for silent, emission-free operation, either while anchored for a week or cruising at 10 knots.
