HMM Partners with IKEA to Decarbonize Ocean Transport

June 12, 2024 |

In Korea, HMM and IKEA Supply Chain Operations have signed an agreement to utilize HMM’s ‘Green Sailing Service,’ a low-carbon ocean transport solution aimed at reducing environmental impact and contributing to the decarbonization of ocean transportation.

This initiative focuses on significantly lowering carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) emissions by replacing conventional fossil fuels with waste-based biofuels for transporting IKEA products. These biofuels, certified by the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC), are derived from waste-based biomass. HMM will deploy these sustainable biofuels for its Far East-India-Mediterranean (FIM) service.

The partnership is expected to reduce approximately 11,500 tonnes of CO2e emissions between March 1, 2024, and February 28, 2025. This reduction is equivalent to transporting 14,534 TEU of Zero Emission Cargo from Busan, Asia, to Rotterdam, Europe.

IKEA aims to reduce the relative greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from its product transportation by 70% by 2030 and achieve zero emissions cargo by 2040. HMM, which launched the ‘Green Sailing Service’ earlier this year, plans to expand the scope of its service through broad cooperation.

An HMM official said, “We will keep looking for ways to make sustainable development our top goal, which will help us make important progress towards carbon neutrality.”
