Germany’s DITF and FILK develop synthetic leather from bio-based PBS
In India, Fibre2Fashion reported that an AiF project carried out in close cooperation between the German Institutes of Textile and Fiber Research Denkendorf (DITF) and the Freiberg Institute (FILK), will enable the development of synthetic leather using polybutylene succinate (PBS) for both fiber and coating, meeting sustainability criteria.
PBS, sourced from renewable materials, allows for efficient processing and end-of-life recycling.
PBS can be produced from biogenic sources and is now available on the market in several grades and in large quantities. Its biodegradability has been demonstrated in tests. The material can be processed thermoplastically. This applies to both the fiber material and the coating. Subsequent product recycling is facilitated by the thermoplastic properties, DITF said on its website.
