Greenfield, European Energy plan e-methanol plant in Canada
In Canada, Greenfield Global and Denmark’s European Energy announced a joint venture Oct. 29 to develop a 48,000 tonne per year e-methanol plant near Montréal, combining renewable electricity with carbon dioxide from an existing ethanol distillery to supply marine fuel and industrial markets.
The project would use biogenic CO₂ generated during ethanol fermentation, taking advantage of Québec’s low-cost hydroelectricity, established industrial infrastructure and export routes to European and domestic markets.
The companies intend to produce e-methanol meeting European renewable fuel of non-biological origin requirements, with potential applications in shipping and renewable polymers.
Preliminary engineering is complete and grid connection construction is underway. The partners are beginning discussions with potential buyers.
European Energy brings experience from its operating Kassø e-methanol facility in Denmark, which has annual production capacity of 42,000 tonnes.
