A strong El Niño could reduce Brazilian soybean production

October 31, 2026 |

In Brazil, UOL reported that A strong El Niño could reduce Brazilian soybean production by 17.6 million tons in the 2026/27 crop year, a 9.7% difference compared to the volume that would be obtained under neutral weather conditions, according to a study released by Serasa Experian.

The survey estimates a harvest of 163.6 million tons if productivity repeats the conditions observed in the strong El Niño of 2023/24, compared to 181.2 million tons in a neutral scenario, based on the 2024/25 crop year. In both cases, the cultivated area would be the same: 49.9 million hectares, a growth of 1.8%, or almost 1 million hectares, compared to the previous season, according to the report.

The difference lies in crop yields. In the neutral scenario, average productivity would reach 3,622 kilograms per hectare. Under conditions similar to the 2023/24 El Niño, it would fall to 3,282 kilograms, the report added.
