Agribusiness bioenergy accounts for nearly 30% of Brazil’s energy supply

October 29, 2026 |

In Brazil, Valor International reports bioenergy from Brazil’s agricultural, agro-industrial and forestry sectors accounted for 29.8% of the country’s domestic energy supply in 2025, according to a study by Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV). The sector supplied 97.8 million tons of oil equivalent (toe), representing approximately 60% of all renewable energy available in Brazil. Its contribution has grown substantially over five decades, from 6.5 million toe in 1970. Between 2021 and 2025, agribusiness-related bioenergy supply increased by around 16%. The study highlights the importance of sugarcane, corn, planted forests and cellulose in Brazil’s energy system, with bioenergy expanding alongside wind and solar rather than being displaced by them.
