Greece gets first domestic biomethane plant

October 21, 2026 |

In Greece, important step for the development of the domestic biomethane market marks the imminent beginning of the test operation of the first compressed biomethane production plant in Greece, which is being developed by DEPA Trading in cooperation with the CHITAS FARM, at the latter’s premises in the Philippines. The biomethane produced will be used as a drive fuel (bio-CNG), enhancing the possibilities of supply of renewable fuels through the FISIKON station network of DEPA Commercial.

This development follows the issuance of the first license for the establishment of a biomethane production plant in the country, in accordance with Law 5215/2025 and the Regulation for the Installation and Operation of Biomethane Production Units, marking an important milestone for the implementation of the new institutional framework.

The project concerns the upgrading of biogas to high purity biomethane and its subsequent compression and storage, in order to be used as a bio-CNG fuel. It is a pilot project of particular importance for the domestic energy market, as it creates the conditions for the utilization of a renewable energy source and its integration into existing energy infrastructure.

The produced compressed biomethane can be available through DEPA Commercial DEPA’s FISIKON stations, enhancing the potential for the use of renewable fuels in the transport sector, as it constitutes a renewable fuel with a zero carbon footprint. At the same time, this technology offers the possibility of transferring compressed biomethane for its use in remote from the natural gas network consumers or its injection into remote gas networks, expanding its prospects of its exploitation.
