India lays foundation for e-methanol plant at Kandla
In India, Gujarat and Assam chief ministers and the federal ports minister laid the foundation stone for the country’s first port based e-methanol plant at Deendayal Port in Kandla, Gujarat, where the 150 tonne per day facility will supply the fuel to ships on the Asia to Europe trade route.
The almost $240 million project by Deendayal Port Authority and Assam Petro-Chemicals will use renewable power, water and biogenic carbon dioxide.
The first phase will add 50 tonnes per day of capacity by January 2027, followed by another 100 tonnes per day by March 2027.
Deendayal Port Authority’s contribution includes equity capital, 75 acres of land, desalinated water and green hydrogen. The government says the plant will produce e-methanol at about $750 per tonne, against a global rate of $1,300.
