Japan tests hydrogen-only engine aboard coastal tanker
In Japan, the 4,500-gross-ton Kikomaru completed a two-hour, 33-kilometer demonstration voyage in Osaka Bay Sept. 25 using a hydrogen-only engine developed by Yanmar Power Solution.
Owner and operator Ueno Transtech retrofitted the coastal tanker for hydrogen fuel and trained its crew for hydrogen operations under the Nippon Foundation’s Zero Emission Ship Project.
The pilot-ignition engine powered the vessel throughout the demonstration, which the foundation said avoided about 1.2 metric tons of carbon dioxide compared with operation on conventional fossil fuel.
The project is part of a Japanese effort launched in 2022 to develop zero-emission vessels for domestic coastal shipping.
